Rheinmetall has unveiled the GMF 140, a new 140-metre guided missile frigate designed to provide advanced multi-mission capabilities for NATO and allied navies while targeting future procurement opportunities in North America and other international markets.
The approximately 6,000-tonne warship is intended to perform a wide range of missions, including anti-air warfare (AAW), ballistic missile defence (BMD), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and long-range strike operations. Rheinmetall said the frigate was developed to meet the evolving operational requirements of modern naval forces operating in increasingly complex threat environments.
The company plans to initially offer the GMF 140 as part of a procurement campaign in North America before pursuing additional opportunities with allied navies seeking next-generation surface combatants.
Designed for blue-water operations, the frigate also supports expeditionary, littoral and coalition missions through an open-architecture design intended to facilitate future upgrades and interoperability with allied fleets.
The GMF 140 is designed to integrate U.S.-sourced primary radar options, including configurations capable of full ballistic missile defence tracking, alongside the AEGIS Combat System. Rheinmetall said the vessel can also be equipped with Lockheed Martin’s CMS330 Combat Management System, providing an alternative combat management architecture capable of integrating both North American and European sensors and weapons.
The ship features 64 strike-length vertical launch system (VLS) cells compatible with a wide range of air-defence, ballistic missile defence and land-attack missiles. Additional armament includes anti-ship missiles, torpedo launchers, a 5-inch main gun, close-in weapon systems (CIWS), directed-energy laser options and secondary weapons.
For anti-submarine warfare, the GMF 140 incorporates a low-signature hull design, integrated acoustic management systems, hull-mounted and towed sonar arrays, and facilities for operating embarked helicopters and unmanned systems.
Rheinmetall said the vessel was designed with high survivability, reduced crew requirements and digital integration in mind, positioning it as a future-ready combat platform capable of operating alongside leading NATO naval forces.
The launch of the GMF 140 expands Rheinmetall’s growing naval portfolio as the company seeks to strengthen its presence in the international surface combatant market amid rising global demand for advanced frigates and integrated air and missile defence capabilities.
